Do one thing every day that scares you.
“Do one thing every day that scares you.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt
I have heard and read that we should do one thing that scares us every day. That by facing a fear head on it helps reduce anxiety and overcome the fear.
For many people it is speaking in public, driving in unfamiliar areas, or maybe it’s a fear of heights.
One thing that comes to mind for me is hiking Devil’s Bridge in Sedona. After turning around and heading back down Cathedral Rock I was disappointed in myself. For some reason I got freaked out at the slowly inclining rock path and somehow the height got to me. So, when we hit the hike to Devil’s Bridge I didn’t want to back down. I crawled on my hands and knees up the final ledges, and even managed to creep around and over to the “bridge”. And yes, I’ve got the photo to prove it! To this day I feel great satisfaction in conquering that fear!
That feeling of fear and trepidation is common in many areas of our life. As a financial coach, I have people show up for their appointment and tell me they almost didn’t come because they were afraid. However, no one has told me they wish they had not come. Sometimes facing a tough situation is scary. But facing it head on can bring a feeling of relief and exhilaration.
Often, we imagine the worst when reality isn’t nearly as terrifying as it is in our head.
I challenge you to do something today that scares you. Sometimes it might not turn out the way you hoped it would. Sometimes it turns out a hundred times better!
